Will Teen Wolf Suck Horribly? Tyler Hoechlin Answers!

I love supernatural drama, and television has long been missing werewolves; not that True Blood, the Vampire Diaries, and even, for a short time The Gates, have not delivered. But those shows were primarily about vampires, and assorted other creatures; werewolves have periodic appearances, or at best, get the honor of being supporting characters. That’s sarcasm, by the way. So when we heard Teen Wolf would be made into a show, my first thought is, “Ugh, can we not do the whole campy werewolf thing?” Michael J Fox made that horrible movie, and he has to live with it, why should we be tormented with more of the same gut-wrenching, inane farce in the form of a show? But! Rather than worry, I looked for more information about the show, set to premier in June, and as it turns out, we may have more to look forward to than one-liner jokes about body hair and diet, –thank the werewolf gods in all their furry glory.

Tyler Hoechlin did a short interview with About.com; just so there’s no confusion. Here’s what Hoechlin, who will be one of the werewolves in the series, had to say about the ‘new’ Teen Wolf:

And you’ve also got Teen Wolf.

Tyler Hoechlin: “Yes.”

And you’re playing a bad werewolf?

Tyler Hoechlin: “Yeah, he’s a little bit of a mystery. He’s kind of a…you kind of keep guessing about him the whole first season, which is very fun to play. It’s very fun not to play one thing. You kind of get to toy with everybody a little bit. So that comes out June 5th. We premiere after the Movie Awards on MTV, and I’m really excited about it.”

Great spot.

Tyler Hoechlin: “Great spot. Yeah, so we’ve got three more weeks of production and then we’re…”

So that’ll wrap up the whole first season?

Tyler Hoechlin: “Whole first season will be in the can in about three or four weeks. Yeah.”

How do they do your transformation? Is it pure CGI?

Tyler Hoechlin: “No, actually we’re doing as much as we can without CGI. We’re going to do a lot of everything with makeup, and our stunt team is amazing. We do a lot of stunts without having to use rigs and all that stuff. So I think people are going to be blown away when they see what we’ve been able to do. The makeup’s fantastic. The guy who does our makeup is nominated for an Academy Award this weekend. Awesome.”

Can’t get much better than that.

Tyler Hoechlin: “Right? It’s been a great shoot and it’s been a lot of fun. Hopefully people will enjoy it.”

I heard the tone is very different from the movies.

Tyler Hoechlin: “Very different. Definitely not Teen Wolf of Michael J Fox, yeah. We’re going a lot darker and be very… We’re trying to do our own thing and be original and try to take our own take on it. And I think our creator and writer Jeff Davis has done a great job doing that. He’s the same guy who created Criminal Minds and so it’s just a very dark, smart kind of sexy show.”

Curiouser and curiouser! Hear that guys? Definitely not the Teen Wolf of Michael J Fox. And on top of that, there won’t be any CGI, –at least, if there is, it should be minimal. And he also promises that the show will be ‘dark’ and ‘sexy’. Ooooh. You know, as much as I love the idea, I kinda resent the fact that it will be on MTV’s network. Namely because, MTV is supposed to be for music, right? Not only that, but they’re taking HBO and CW’s success, and trying to cash in on it for themselves as a bail out, because no one likes their shitty reality shows anymore. We get the benefit of a new werewolf show, but, the price is steep: MTV will be staying in business that much longer. Those bastards!

  1. True Blood has horrible werewolves! How can you say they have delivered. The werewolves are weak! They can’t even fight! and they lose to vampires and human beings easily! Name one scene, where the werewolves kicked vampire or human ass, on True Blood.

  2. I am willing to see it if I can catch it though, it really does not sound like they are putting much faith in this one.
