Not a new comicbook series. We’re talking about a live-action Marvel streaming series, here! And it should be arriving for Halloween of next year! This is a big surprise, as we’ve heard nothing about the project before now. It also makes sense, given that the MOON KNIGHT series is in the works, and Werewolf by Night plays a big part in Moon Knight’s origin. (Moon Knight made his debut in a Werewolf by Night comic way back in the early 70s, and gained superhuman strength after getting bitten by the Werewolf.) The only potential complication (which won’t really be a complication, as all it will require is a bit of retconning, which Marvel is really good at) is that, in the established lore from the comics, it is Jack Russell, the original Werewolf by Night who has the run-in with Moon Knight. But they’ve introduced a new Werewolf in the comics, a guy named Jake Gomez. And since Marvel is reportedly looking to cast a Latino actor in the role, we can safely assume it will be Gomez and not Russell.
The Jake Gomez character works just fine. And there’s no reason at all that the Werewolf by Night shouldn’t be a minority character. But for those of us with a fondness for Russell, it’s a little bit of a disappointment. Maybe they’ll figure out a way to use both characters, the way they did with Ghost Rider; reportedly, while they’ve introduced the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider, there are also plans to introduce the Johnny Blaze version into MCU continuity.
