Update on the PENNY DREADFUL Comic

I live about an hour away from my comic shop of choice. There are shops closer to where I live, but this one is owned by a friend of mine, so I give them my business. Because of the distance, it isn’t always convenient for me to swing by the store to pick up my books. I’m going to have to make a point of doing it this weekend, though, because I’m anxiously awaiting getting my hands on the premiere issue of the new PENNY DREADFUL comic. The series is being written by the TV series executive producer Chris King.

King recently commented on the historic penny dreadfuls, where “For a penny, you would buy these really cheap serialized stories so you would keep coming back to and following it. The goal for the television series was to do the same thing, where you really got to know these characters and keep watching them experience all sorts of evil situations and try to protect each other and humankind. So the series lent itself to the comic book form…” He also stresses that he was the choice of series creator John Logan to helm this new comic series. “After the show ended and we knew we were going to continue telling stories within the comic book, I already had an idea based on what John was thinking…I spoke to him about it, and where we were going, and obviously he gave me his blessing and has been very supportive of it.”

So what can we expect from this new series? Look for the book to get around to filling in the gaps left by the abrupt ending of the show, like reuniting Ethan with Brona/Lily Frankenstein. As for Vanessa Ives returning: “It might not necessarily be the Vanessa Ives that we know and love.” And expect favorites like Lyle, Catriona, and Dr. Seward to return, as well as the debut of a new villain, Belial the Mummy.

Will PENNY DREADFUL be an ONGOING series? That’s up to you. Buy the book. Talk it up. “The goal is to keep going along and hopefully do as many comic books as the fans will want to read,” says King. I don’t know about you, but I want a LOT of them. Let’s make it happen.
