There Really Might Be A Cannibal In The Jungle, But Animal Planet Is Making It Harder To Believe In It.

A scripted feature based on actual science, the film ponders the existence of real three-foot-tall human-like creatures — nicknamed Hobbits — that might have escaped extinction to wreak havoc on a group of scientists in the rainforest of Indonesia.

Discovery Channel and its sister stations, of which Animal Planet is one of the most popular, have really gotta chill with the faux-documentaries. They’re just confusing kids with that claptrap. Having real scientists portraying themselves in fictitious movies designed to resemble authentic nature documentaries, that just ain’t kosher. It started with MERMAIDS, then insidiously slithered its way into Shark Week with MEGALODON. The most recent deceptive offering is AP’s THE CANNIBAL IN THE JUNGLE. I really disapprove of this new trend towards fake-found-footage. It cheapens all nature/educational programming. Shame on you, Discovery!

That being said, CANNIBAL IN THE JUNGLE is pretty entertaining. The premise is that the Indonesian “Hobbit” Homo floresiensis has managed to survive into modern times, lurking in the most remote reaches of the island jungles. A group of ornithologists stumble across them and, in true Horror movie fashion, the “Hobbits,” which are cannibalistic (hence the title) start to treat the hapless birdwatchers as hors d’oeuvres. Like I said, entertaining. Problem is, the native people of Flores really DO have folktales of a small, feral race that really COULD BE relic Homo floresiensis. But after this movie, it’s gonna be even tougher to get a serious scientist to even consider that possibility.
