The Wold Newton Connection

Okay, y’all stick with me, here, as this can get a little complicated. The Wold Newton Triangle in England is, just like the Bermuda Triangle which its name calls to mind, or the Alaska Triangle, or the Great lakes Triangle (Ever wonder why such areas are always triangles? Why not the Wold Newton hexagon? The Bermuda Rhomboid?) an area of longstanding weirdness and purported paranormal activity. We’re talking centuries of strangeness, here. Unlike the Bermuda Triangle, though, the Wold Newton Triangle is on land. Like, you can walk through it. (I’d recommend you drive, though.) Sightings of dragons, UFOs, faeries, ghosts, etc. are numerous. Most importantly for this site, Ol’ Stinker, the Werewolf of Hull, has been linked to the Triangle, one of its many denizens of the paranormal variety.

Here’s where the connection to Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan comes into it. A meteorite struck the earth in the Wold Newton Triangle in 1795; this is a documented historical occurrence. Science Fiction writer Philip Jose farmer capitalized on this event, making it the common origin for numerous fictional heroes and villains, among them the aforementioned Lord of the Jungle and world’s greatest detective. It seems the folks in the area, according to Farmer, were exposed to radiation, and their descendents, bequeathed their altered DNA, became superhuman or outstanding in some way. Holmes, Tarzan, Fu Manchu, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and even James Bond thus share a common origin with Ol’ Stinker. Who knew?
