The Werewolf’s Cousin: The Werefox

Today we’re going to mix it up a bit and take a look at a different kind of shapeshifter. After one of our readers asked about werefoxes I figured, why the hell not? They may not be werewolves but they fall into the same shapeshifting furry family. So today we’ll take a tiny break from werewolves and look into the world of werefoxes.

Northern China is home to quite a few werefox stories, in the legends werefoxes inhabit the netherworld between the material plane and the unseen dimensions. They can take human form though, and in this form they appear as gorgeous girls and young men. But even in human for they still have a fox tail, a tail that occasionally pops out of their clothing (after all it would be pretty difficult to hide a big fluffy tail).

The male werefoxes and the female werevixens can mate with normal humans, but if a person were to mate with one of these weres it could turn them into the foxes’ zombie-like slave.

A werefox will lose control of its human form when it sleeps, or when it has too much alcohol to drink. So if you suspect someone of being a fox then simply get them super drunk or knock them out. Simple enough.

Now we move to the Unites States – while most people are familiar with the Native American legends about werewolves (thanks to Twilight) it was the fox that many Native American sorcerers preferred to shapeshift into. Even though most tribes consider the fox as an instrument of negativity, evil magicians loved this form. A werefox may not be able to rip someone to shreds like a werewolf, but in many myths it could place a terrible curse on someone’s head instead.

If you guys are interested in hearing about other types of shapeshifters then leave a comment letting me know and maybe I’ll give you some other types of shapeshifters (there’s a lot out there). Werewolves are our number one love, but it’s nice to take a peek at their cousins.

  1. Mallory – don’t dis gingers, lol :)

    I love werefoxes – they’re so interesting.
I love real foxes too :) They’re so sleek and amazing to watch, and so secretive too.

    1. nope im a werewolf too. ;) i LOVE werewolfs!!!!!!!!!! i would love to know more about them and other shapeshifters as well :)

      1. I can help with that. Werewolves are very different creatures. They are slaves to the full moon, when they are shifted they have no control over themselves. They do have a sibling like them called Lycanthropes who are smarter, stronger, bigger, and are able to change at will. They both can be given to a human by bite or they can create an offspring that is a werewolf/lycan.

  2. have you considered wing shifters, they are a type of shape shifter. its said they can shifted in to any animal.

  3. Jesus christ dude…you stole the werefox description from the Forgoten Realms monster manual and your trying to play it off as real? You even used a fucking furfaggot pic for the definition…how lame can you get? Complete POS homo BS right in this place.

    1. No, I didn’t get it from the Forgotten Realms manual. I got it from a book of myths and folklore. I can guarantee that Forgotten Realms based their werefox on old myths, just like most games do. Use some common sense genius.

  4. It is nice to find more info on my kind. I would like to point out that the stronger foxes have ALOT of abilities no one else does, such as being able to disguise themselves in another form.

    1. yup Kitsune are Shapeshifters. We are not Weres. yes we are Foxes yet also not your average fox in the wild. We are very different and often have multiple tails.

  5. I am a Kitsune as well. We have up to nine tails. I only have five. Maybe i can talk to another like myself?

  6. You guys you problaby won’t believe me but I did a where wolf spell on a full moon in my bedroom and a week later I started to get really hungry after I eat and on a full moon I feel like I have more energy and in day time I don’t and also my teeth got really sharp and pointy and I was able to run faster and a grew more hair and my eye color changed to and I get angry very easly I also stare at the moon long periods of time

  7. Hey I’m writing a book and need some help. What are some cultures that believe(d) the lore of the werefox? Is it related to the kitsune? Do they have powers other than be able to curse someone? Do they turn annually like a werewolf? How does someone become a werefox? Thanks

  8. What age do the werefoxes are mature at? I mean, at what age they have the hightest senses and start shifting? And how can anyone become a werefox? Is genetic or what?

  9. I know about this stuff, being a werefox (or kitsune or whatever you want to call it) myself, and most of it is true. Except that we can keep human forms while asleep when we want to and we can have no tail while in human form, effectively hiding it.

    1. is it ok that we speak? I am a possible Kitsune myself and I do not get to meet others I am confused and lost.

  10. I was wondering if you could do something for the Werecoyote. I am a Werecoyote well Eastern Coyote whitch is also a Coywolf. Anyway I thought for a long time I was Kitsune or Wolf or even feline. but after much thinking and the Guidence of Coyote himself. i am learning the truth. It would be interesting to see something about the werecoyote as not much is ever seen on the subject except for Teen Wolf. So if possible that is a suggestion I would like to make.

  11. For a cool old song about a werefox that seduces beautiful young women look up ‘Reynardine’. My favourite version is by the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Should be more songs about werefolk, I think!

  12. I would like to add Kitsune are NOT werefoxes. Kitsune are foxes yet very different from foxes and werefoxes.
