The Ugly Bastard Offspring of LEGLESS CORPSE FILM FESTIVAL

I have saved the worst for last. The one offering out of the dozens I viewed that was just plain BAD. I don’t mean bad in the good sense. Not the Ed Wood, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE kind of bad, where the film is so enjoyable simply BECAUSE of its shortcomings. I’m talking about the wallowing-in-its-own-mediocrity kind of bad. The kind of movie Ed himself would have walked out of, wondering aloud, “What the $#*&! did I just watch?!”

The movie I am referring to is MURDER FOR PLEASURE, and it is damn sure anything BUT a pleasure to watch. The plot, what passes for it, involves a deranged young man committing grisly murders. And seeing things. Or maybe he’s only imagining the murders. Hell, I don’t know, and I didn’t care. The acting was so high-school Drama class and the characters so wafer-thin as to be translucent, so instantly unlikable—no, there would have to have actually been characters in the movie in order for them to be unlikeable; the truth is, you don’t even notice them, because there are none; there’s just killer and person being killed, and then some people reciting dialogue, and then more killing—that I was never engaged. Not for an instant. I suspect what happened was, they concocted a shoddy framework of story in order to have an excuse to film their kill scenes. These last were the sparkly ornaments hung on a dead Christmas tree, and they provide the only opportunity I have to praise this movie, as the FX are quite good. My advice: If you watch this one, just fast-forward to the bloody parts. It’ll cut the movie in half, but I promise you, you won’t be missing anything.
