The Oscars Blow
Whoever wins the award for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards (and it will probably be Glenn Close) I challenge you to watch her performance, then watch Toni Collette in HEREDITARY, and then you tell me who was better. I know I’m preaching to the choir, here, but I gotta rant. The Oscars does not recognize the best work in cinema; it only recognizes the best work in cinema in a limited niche—and even then, they get it wrong! Check out BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (see my review over at vampires.com this week). Tell me that whatever movie wins Best Picture was really better than that one. You can’t, because it won’t be.
I love that BLACK PANTHER got a nomination, but let’s be honest. They were just throwing out a political bone to the GET OUT contingent. It won’t win. And even if it did by some miracle win, it wouldn’t be any more deserving than A QUIET PLACE. They really need to just admit that the Academy recognizes outstanding *mainstream* work, and mainstream work *only.* Anyone who suggests the Oscars are anything more than that is full of it. This year, I’ll tell you who should *really* win an Oscar, but I’ll wait until the show airs to do it.
