The Micromoon

By the time you are reading this, the Micromoon may have already occurred (probably not), taking place on the night of Friday the 13th! The moon will be at apogee; that is, at its farthest point from the earth. But it will still be a full moon. It will just look smaller than normal. This is the opposite of a Supermoon, where the moon is at its closest to the earth. The Micromoon will also be the “Harvest Moon,” so we’re getting the relatively rare celestial occurrence of a Harvest Micromoon on a Friday the 13th! (There won’t be another full moon on a Friday the 13th until the year 2049.) This is bound to have all kinds of occult significance according to folklore.

To the Celtic people, the Harvest Moon was an important marker to let them know that Samhain was coming. (The Harvest Moon is sometimes the last Full Moon before Halloween; the full moon for October is known as the Hunter’s Moon, and will fall this year on October 12th, so that is not a hard and fast rule.) For the Vikings, the Harvest Moon was the first full moon after the first frost, and thus it had greater magical significance.

One has to wonder, does a Micromoon causes werewolves to become slightly smaller?
