THE HUNT: Author’s Note
By choosing to put this story out there, I feel it necessary to provide a little commentary to go with it, some sugar to help the cough syrup go down. And if I don’t point out the, ahem, problems with it, somebody else is liable to, don’t you think?
This one is as far from being PC as its possible to get without being something genuinely offensive. The main character is a sexist and the female lead is dependent throughout the entire story on her “may-un”. And of the other female characters in the story, one’s a stripper and one’s a Maguffin, a victim in need of rescuing, again by a “may-un.” But consider that this story, when written, was intended to be only an opening salvo. Saint’s redemption was going to be a long haul, taking time. And with time we’d get to see stronger female characters, and get to see that there’s more to Arly than is presented in THE HUNT. I did write a rather lengthy second chapter of Saint’s exploits, almost completed it. But then I lost interest. Maybe some day I’ll finish it. If people wanted me to.
It also might interest readers to know that the Highway of Tears featured in this story is real. Says Wikipedia: “The Highway of Tears is a 725-kilometre (450 mi) corridor of Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, which has been the location of many murders and disappearances beginning in 1970. The phrase was coined in 1998 during a vigil held in Terrace, British Columbia for four murdered and two missing women. There are a disproportionately high number of Indigenous women on the list of victims.” I intended the monster in THE HUNT to serve as a metaphor of sorts for the kinds of real-world evil that have claimed numerous innocent lives along this stretch of road. In our real world, though, we can’t put the blame on a trans-dimensional kidnapper. The blood in the real world is on human hands.
