First the facts: Jayne Mansfield died in a car wreck outside New Orleans in 1967 at age 34.
The legend: Mansfield had started an affair with Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan. When she dumped him, he put a curse on her, resulting in her death in that wreck. Alternately, Mansfield attended a Black Mass at LaVey’s home, and her current boyfriend made fun of LaVey. The necromancer then put a curse on both him and Mansfield, resulting in their deaths in that wreck. Or alternately again, that boyfriend had been slapping Jayne around, and she turned to LaVey for help. He put the curse on the guy, but it got Mansfield in the process, which was not part of LaVey’s plan. Or—once more alternately!—Mansfield rejected Billy Graham’s invitation to become a Christian and instead hooked up with LaVey. God then whacked her to punish her. That’s the version I was told by a preacher when I was a little boy, back when I still believed that God was a big mean bully who’d rather whack blondes than end cancer.
The truth (maybe): Mansfield had a long history of publicity stunts. While she did pose for photographs with LaVey, who was himself a notorious publicity whore, it’s possible these were nothing more than that, a publicity stunt. There are so many stories floating around, none of which can be verified, most of which are probably not true. We will probably never know where the truth ends and the legend begins.
