Tanya’s Island

I kid you not. This one actually exists. It is a sappy love story, the kind you’d expect to see on Lifetime during any given afternoon, and it’s way ahead of its time in that it features a love triangle. As we all know, love triangles are de rigueur these days after THE HUNGER GAMES made them so and some movie called TWILIGHT reinforced it. What makes TANYA’S ISLAND stand out is that it is a love triangle between a man, a woman, and a Bigfoot. Again, I kid you not.

In addition to being a sappy romance, it’s a softcore porno. Pure exploitation trash. The heroine, who spends most of the film naked or semi-naked, gets raped by Bigfoot, then falls in love with him. This is surely one of those projects the people involved would have wanted to forget, and wanted other people to forget.

Released in 1980, TANYA’S ISLAND stars Vanity in her pre-THE LAST DRAGON and pre-Prince days, and features creature FX designed by both Rick Baker—in his pre-AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON days (more like during his OCTAMAN days)—and Rob Bottin, in his pre-THE HOWLING days! So in addition to being both a sappy romance and softcore porno, it happens to feature on display the work of two of Hollywood’s greatest FX legends! I kid you not!
