STRANGER THINGS Season Three – Steve Goes To The Mall
This commercial is brilliant. This commercial is hilarious. This commercial is also an example of just how clever and creative a show can get when it is as over as STRANGER THINGS. (Wrestling terminology: the term harkens back to the Carnie days, from which wrestling sprung; for a performer to be “over” means that fans are buying into what the performer is selling, believing in the performer to the extent that the performer is generating reactions from the crowd. It equates to recognizability; in this case, cultural saturation.) The title of the show is never mentioned. The commercial appears to be a straight-up advertisement for a mall, filmed back in the glorious 80s. (And huzzah to the creators of STRANGER THINGS for finally putting a mall in the show. If it’s the 80s, how could it NOT have a mall in it?)
Here’s what the press release for the commercial says: “Coming to Hawkins in the Summer of 1985…the Starcourt Mall! Starcourt Mall will be one of the finest shopping facilities in America and beyond with options for the entire family. Including The Gap, Waldenbooks, Sam Goody, Claire’s and more! Don’t forget to cool off at Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream shop. Starcourt Mall has it all!”
Poor Steve. He looks so happy to be working at Scoops Ahoy.
