STRANGER THINGS Honors The Classics
Check out these new posters for the upcoming second season of STRANGER THINGS. The EVIL DEAD tribute is spot-on and appropriately epic. The character posters have that vintage 80s look to them, as is only fitting. I think my favorite, though, is the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET-inspired one (pictured). This last is especially apropos, given that the STRANGER THINGS character Nancy Wheeler, portrayed by Natalia Dyer, was named after Heather Langenkamp’s heroine of the same (first) name, Nancy Thompson, in the NIGHTMARE franchise.
The loving winks that STRANGER THINGS gives to its audience when it pays tribute to one of the Horror masterpieces that paved the way for it constitute, in my opinion, one of the reasons for its phenomenal success. Other such reasons would be good acting, good storytelling, good special effects, and a cast that overall is able to invest each character with humanity and realism; these are real people we are watching on screen, albeit fictitious interpretations of them. And they remain real even when they’re running from crazy Lovecraftian monsters. The series will be returning next month. Can it live up to its own standards? Can the magic in the bottle that was season one be recaptured? I’m betting it can.
