Soska Sisters vs. Tarantino

I really like the Soska sisters, the dynamic “Twisted Twins” directing duo responsible for such films as AMERICAN MARY. I don’t doubt that if we all knew each other in real life and lived in the same geographic location we’d be good friends. They are kindred spirits. Quentin Tarantino is a kindred spirit, too, but I don’t know if he and I would get along. Reportedly he can be difficult, and reportedly I can be difficult (where the last of these is concerned I will admit it is confirmed fact), and we might not mesh that well. This isn’t a question of who I personally like more, then. I’m only callin’ ‘em like I see ‘em.

The Soskas hate Tarantino. HATE him. It all goes back to the incident with Uma Thurman on the set of KILL BILL where Thurman said she was pressured by Tarantino to drive a stunt car against her wishes and was in the ensuing crash injured. But the Soskas also seem to blame Tarantino for the actions of pervert extraordinaire Harvey Weinstein. (Weinstein produced several of Tarantino’s films and the two were friends.) In their defense they have also criticized Meryl Streep for the same things, so it isn’t a case of misandry on their part. And the question of just how much people who were around Weinstein were aware of his criminal behavior before he got pinched is a valid one.

Even so, recently on social media the Soskas were ripping into people who loved Tarantino’s latest film ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Said the Soskas: “Only men who identify as [Tarantino] rush to his defence [sic]. Another episode of MEN BLINDLY DEFENDING TARANTINO!!!! Ha ha ha. Y’all are very easily lead. Yup. Him, Polanski, Harvey, they’re all heroes, right?” This kind of thinking, equating anyone who liked the movie as also lionizing the likes of Weinstein, is what’s known as an association fallacy and it can be dangerous.

I won’t attempt to defend Tarantino. That should be left to people who actually know him. A lot of people dig him. A lot of women are happy to work with him. This includes Uma Thurman’s daughter Maya Hawke, who appeared in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, and Thurman herself, who has since reconciled with Tarantino and has said she would work with him again.

The issue is not black and white. It’s complicated. That’s all I’m qualified to say on the subject.
