Shuri Must Not Be the Next Black Panther

From a storytelling point of view, it makes the most sense. But for Marvel to make Shuri, the real Black Panther’s little sister, the Black Panther in the wake of us losing Chadwick Boseman, would be a big mistake. Unless they recast the role, that is. Yeah, yeah, you can talk all day about separating the art from the artist. That doesn’t work in real life. Yes, I can still watch a Tom Cruise movie knowing what I know about Tom Cruise the actor, but it does have an effect. As the new Black Panther is going to be replacing a character so beloved by the audience, the contender for the title must be beloved himself/herself. And Letitia Wright is anything *but* universally beloved. An anti-vaxxer, transphobe, and climate-change denier, she is closer to being contemptible.

As it stands right now, if I find out that Shuri becomes the Black Panther when the sequel comes out next year, I won’t go see it. I’m a diehard Marvel mark. I’ve never missed a Marvel movie at the theater. So for somebody like *me* to say he won’t go see the new Black Panther movie, that’s really saying something.

Disney isn’t deaf to such concerns. They fired Gina Carano, and rightfully so. They need to get rid of Letitia Wright before it’s too late.
