Review: WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
Whatever movie ends up winning the Oscar next year, it won’t be any better than this one. There are folks calling for Andy Serkis to get nominated for a Best Actor award, the way they were after his performance as Gollum. As was the case back then, he won’t get it. Woody Harrelson also deserves an Oscar nomination. He won’t get one, either. The movie for sure won’t get any nominations, unless it’s for special effects. All this is just another undeniable example of why the Oscars lack credibility. No genre movie, no matter how excellent it is–and you won’t find one better than WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES–will receive any love from “the Academy” (unless it has Anthony Hopkins in it, but even then it’s no guarantee). That’s such a shame, because this just might be the finest movie released this year.
The quality isn’t just in the acting and script, though. Director Matt Reeves and crew tinkered with the cameras and hardware with this one, and the result is some spectacular visuals. And, per usual, the ape FX are breathtaking. This is one movie that deserves to be seen on the big screen. Do yourself a favor and DON’T wait for it to come out on video.
