Astute readers may recall that I posted a few weeks back a “non-review” of the novel THE TURNING by author Micky Neilson. I had read about the premise—a werewolf onboard a cruise ship—and found it so promising that I chose to comment on it even before reading the novel. As luck would have it, either Mr. Neilson saw my article on this site, or else someone else did and tipped him off to it, because he contacted me and wanted to know if I’d be interested in his sending me a review copy. A free copy of a book I’d surely buy? Absolutely I was interested. I put it at the top of my to-be-read stack and just finished it last night. Did it live up to that premise I found so intriguing?
I not infrequently am sent novels to review. As often as not, finishing them becomes a chore, as they are not, in my estimation, particularly good or sufficiently interesting. When I get hold of one and end up liking it, it’s a rare treat, but I’ve never been sent one I absolutely LOVED—not until now. THE TURNING is totally f*cking AWESOME! It’s as good as any werewolf novel I’ve read, honestly, and I’ve read a plenty of them. Neilson is a gifted writer, providing snappy prose, punchy dialogue, well fleshed-out characters. And once the actual turning takes place, once he unleashes the werewolf on that ship full of victims, whoa, mama! It’s a nonstop adrenaline rush! Well done, sir! I salute you. I recommend you all head on over to Amazon and buy yourselves a copy of THE TURNING—and get to reading it—pronto.
Edit: Apologies for spelling Micky’s name wrong.
