Review: PENNY DREADFUL The Comic Series Issue 4

SPOILER WARNING if you haven’t read it!

Nuh-uh, now! I don’t like that one bit! You CANNOT kill off Sir Malcolm! Yes, I do realize this is the PENNY DREADFUL universe, where dead doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I’m not gonna panic then, despite ominous signs that this may be for real, like having the Mummy’s hordes burn down Sir Malcolm’s house. I will keep faith that writer Tom King won’t get rid of such an amazing character. I mean, John Logan (the creep!) killed off Vanessa, and she was back this issue, still pretty after being dead for weeks and weeks, so “dead” is a relative term. And Vanessa herself isn’t back; it’s just her body that’s back, possessed by Lucifer.

About time Dr. Frankenstein got back into the game, although I’m not sure how much help he’s going to be. What they NEED is The Monster. John Clare could whip some Mummy ass! So can the Lupus Dei, now that Lily–or, as Ethan still knows her, Brona–has him freed from his silver chains. What a fascinating character Lily is. She was downright evil there towards the end of the TV series, and now she’s totally reformed and fighting on the side of the angels. (She IS reformed, right? Or is she up to something?)

Just how powerful is Lucifer/Vanessa going to be, with her being all fresh from the grave and such? The Lupus Dei can handle the Mummy, I have no doubt, but the Devil? And could Ethan even bring himself to rip up Vanessa’s body, even if that body is currently occupied by Lucifer?

Hurry up and get here, issue 5!
