Review: PENNY DREADFUL: The Comic Book Series, Issue 3

Honestly this series just keeps getting better. In the latest issue, we learn what really happened all those years ago in ancient Egypt. Remember back in season one (of the TV series), they were hinting at this stuff, the two brothers, Lucifer (or Set, as he was known then) and Dracula, competing for the love of the Queen of Darkness, a previous incarnation of the lovely Vanessa Ives. This issue fills in the holes by showing us exactly what happened (vampires versus mummies!) and how the new character, Belial the Mummy, fit into it. It’s largely a flashback issue, but that’s okay because the flashback segment is so vital to the overall storyline and also because it’s a blast. It would seem that in order to physically exist in this world, Lucifer must inhabit the body of Vanessa, and in order to make this happen, Lucifer’s servants must have the heart (literally) of someone who truly loved Vanessa. Gee, I wonder who might qualify?

Considering that at the end of the issue, Ethan returns from his self-imposed exile with Dr. Seward, presumably now able to control his transformations into the Lupus Dei, the Mummy and his minions aren’t gonna have an easy time of it when it comes to getting that heart.

My only complaint is that this issue has more than a few typos in the text. This falls squarely on the letterer and on the editor, who should have caught them. Shame of them, as a book this good deserves textual perfection.
