Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore

I regularly check up on upcoming werewolf books, but very few of them ever catch my eye seeing how the majority of new werewolf books are unoriginal trashy romance novels – lame. However, today was different, there was finally a unique werewolf tale for young adults readers – Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore.

Book description:

“Teen Wolf meets True Blood in this fun, boy-friendly story.

Being only half-vamp in a high school like Carpathia Night makes you a whole loser. But Danny Gray manages to escape the worst of the specists at his school. Thanks to the genetic treatments he had as an infant, most people assume Danny’s other half is human. Which is a good thing.

Ever since the development of synthetic blood – SynHeme – vamps have become society’s elite, while wulves like his father work menial jobs and live in bad neighborhoods.  Wulves are less than second class citizens; once a month they become inmates, forced to undergo their Change in dangerous government compounds.

For Danny, living with his vamp mother and going to a school with a nearly all-vamp student body, it’s best to pretend his wulf half doesn’t even exist.  But lately Danny’s been having some weird symptoms — fantastic night vision; a keener-than-usual sense of smell; and headaches, right around the full moon.

Even though it’s tempting to live in denial, it’s hard to ignore evidence.  There’s only a month until the next full moon, and Danny’s time is running out.

Peter Moore speaks to adolescents in a voice that will have them laughing, set in a world that will get them thinking.”

This sounds like a great book for anyone, but particularly teenage guys that are sick of all of the young adult romance werewolf stories. Finding a young adult werewolf book that isn’t about star-crossed lovers is a bitch, they’re practically nonexistent.

What do you folks think, is this a book you can see yourself picking up?

Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore will hit bookshelves February 15, 2011.

  1. Half vampire? I never understand this type of thing for to me vampires are undead blood suckers and cannot (or at least should not) breed! No offence twilight people or other fans of this concept but you are either dead or not and if dead even living dead should not be able to have kids. It “normalises” vampires too much for me.

I am also a bit tired of the werewolf inferiority complex. Having a “wildside” is much cooler than having to drink someones body fluids though n this case synthesised body fluids.

I do think the book should be given a chance because 1. it is centered around a boy of which there are two few stories unless they are the big dark brooding boyfriends of some heroine, 2. he hopefully comes into his own and embraces his wulfish heritage which taken on a more realistic note is a positive message. 3. It has werewolves!!!!!

  2. I would give the book a shot, tho it wont be released till feb. 15
But i do agree with two points from Paul, If youre a vamp, youre either dead or not, if not then your not a vamp. Second i really dislike the cliche werewolf characters that despise what they are. Self loathing is out of style by now.

  3. This does sound interesting, kind of a commentary on an elitist class system. I can see werewolves as being an underclass- they transform into animals, may be regarded as nothing more than savage beasts, whereas vampires are dangerous because when they kill they have full control of their mind. Vampires are beautiful and sophisticated, and werewolves are regular humans until the full moon, when they have no control over their actions.

This isn’t a new idea, it’s been done before, for example in Harry Potter the werewolves are an underclass (although I don’t think vampires are much better off) although I’ve never seen a whole book entirely about this dichotemy. In other stories as well, i.e. Being Human, there’s that kind of thing. The vampires call George ‘Mitchel’s pet’- he’s seen as inferior.

But this novel looks like it takes that idea and explores it thoroughly in a way that will create new characters and a story people who aren’t into sappy romance will actually want to read.

  4. I should be happy there’s a new werewolf book out period. The story premises doesn’t intrigue me though, the plot is something geared towards Teens and it’s not strong enough with the plot to engage me.

As stated already – Vampires breeding… Sure if you want the Dhampires.

And the Werewolves not in control… I’d like it if there were more authors who’d consider that the werewolf is in control and knows what he’s doing when they change… it’d make a story more have more depth and not dependant on a monthly cycle.

I’ll probably bow out as I’m not the target age group this story is aimed for. But I do appreciate that there’s another werewolf novel out there.

  5. Hey yes, This book seems to be a interesting. the society that describes it´s similar to the society described in other book named “Hair of the Dog” by Brett Davis, a society were the sobrenatural kind is no more secret neither hidden, but it´s “outed” and there are scientists developing a “cure” for werewolves,
“It’s not easy turning hairy and nasty every month. But there’s good news for victims of lycanthropy when telethon host Monty Allen announces that science has found a cure–until both researchers who developed the cure are found with their throats torn out. Now, reporter Ashly Durban and ex-cop Bob Savik begin investigating the case, and find themselves running for their lives.”
and there is a Werewolf Rights group, against that cure. It´s old but If you haven´t read I recomend you to it. It has a bit of humour It´s for fun and it´s quick read.
Sorry for my english I´m from Spain (europe) and that book is not edited here neither in spanish I´ve read it in english and I like very much that book.

  6. I am reading it now only a few chapters in and it seems rather good alot better then some of the werewolf, vampire books i have read the concept of having a vampire breed is not a bad one it puts a new perspective on the whole vampire storyline i mean no one really stated through-out the years that they couldn’t breed and this book actually brings a new story to it and its actually nice to read a book thats no completely blah most other vampire, werewolf books are remotly the same story just writen differently this one atleast they are known to be in the world and not outcasts that drift through the night unknown to the rest of the world. Gonna keep reading the book and hope it turns out as good as i want as far as the whole vampire being the higher species i wouldnt turn it out that way they both have their good and bad traits like lycans being able to be out in daylight or that vampires are pretty much a invincibale species i think the fact that one triumphs over the other is just outragous its the same in all books. Glad i found a book that isnt about love and all that hiding our identies
