OUT COME THE WOLVES Promises, um, Wolves

IFC Midnight will be handling distribution in the United States for the Canuck shocker OUT COME THE WOLVES from director Adam MacDonald. Filming is set to begin in the summer next year. Wow, they’re this far out and already have IFC onboard. Good for them.

Here’s the official pitch for the flick: “The story follows a woman who brings her male best friend to meet her fiancé at her family’s secluded family cabin in the woods. As tensions grow between the two men, they set off into the wild on a deer hunt, before a pack of ravenous wolves forces them to face the darkest side of nature.” Sounds promising. Too bad it sounds like the wolves will be your standard variety and not werewolves or direwolves or something. Regular wolves just aren’t that scary, mainly because today we know that wolves don’t attack people, not unless they’re starving or sick. They’re cute and cuddly. I think it would have worked better if they’d gone with feral dogs instead. Feral dogs work as a Horror staple for the same reason that wolves don’t. There’s an inversion of nature, only it’s amplified with dogs. Man’s best friend turning on him? That’s unnatural, and as such more effective psychologically speaking.
