werewolf, werewolves and lycans

Nope. The Oscars Still Suck.

I’ve been so busy celebrating the success of the Horror movie in this year’s Academy Awards nominations–with THE SHAPE OF WATER landing a ton of nominations and GET OUT doing just fine for itself, too–that I overlooked the biggest screwjob of the year, the most egregious, and the most unjust. James McAvoy didn’t get nominated for his performance in SPLIT, and neither did that film get nominated for Best Picture. *sigh* Just when I thought the Oscars might be getting a little credibility.

I don’t know what determines whether a movie, an actor, etc. gets a nomination at the Oscars. I expect there’s a whole lot going on behind the scenes we, the public, aren’t even aware of. (In fact I’m certain of it.) But, if we are going to make that call strictly on the excellence of a performance, McAvoy should have been a shoo-in. Don’t get me wrong. Daniel Kaluuya, nominated for Best Actor this year, was terrific in GET OUT. But McAvoy was better. GET OUT was a good film, really good. SPLIT was better. But SPLIT didn’t have the political undertones of the former and didn’t garner a nomination, so it isn’t just about performance or quality, despite what anybody tells you. McAvoy deserved a nomination, even more than the film itself. McAvoy deserved to WIN.

Also shafted this year was LOGAN, which got a nomination for screenplay but should have been up for Best Picture, and Patrick Stewart, whose performance in that movie blows away every guy who is up for Best Supporting Actor this year. Even Richard Jenkins for THE SHAPE OF WATER.

Oscars, you did better this year. But you still suck.
