New Werewolf Show ‘Hemlock Grove’ On the Way!

That’s right guys, a brand new werewolf show, one starring some big celebs, is on the way! However, if you want to watch it you’ll have to have a Netflix account. Netflix has inked a deal with horror director Eli Roth to create Hemlock Grove, an original series about “murder, mystery, and monsters,” the company announced.

Hemlock Grove, an adaptation of Brian McGreevy’s werewolf novel, has booked Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard in starring roles. The new streaming Netflix series from horror director/producer/writer/actor Eli Roth is set to debut in early 2013.

“I’ve been waiting for years to dive into television, and Eric Newman and I founded Arcade to do elevated genre projects exactly like Hemlock Grove,” Roth said in a statement. “Brian McGreevy’s novel blew me away, and the material lends itself perfectly to long format storytelling. Hemlock Grove is smart, dark, complex, and at times terrifying.”

Book description:

“The body of a young girl is found mangled and murdered in the woods of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania, in the shadow of the abandoned Godfrey Steel mill. A manhunt ensues—though the authorities aren’t sure if it’s a man they should be looking for.

Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a foreboding biotech facility owned by the Godfrey family—their personal fortune and the local economy having moved on from Pittsburgh steel—where, if rumors are true, biological experiments of the most unethical kind take place. Others turn to Peter Rumancek, a Gypsy trailer-trash kid who has told impressionable high school classmates that he’s a werewolf. Or perhaps it’s Roman, the son of the late JR Godfrey, who rules the adolescent social scene with the casual arrogance of a cold-blooded aristocrat, his superior status unquestioned despite his decidedly freakish sister, Shelley, whose monstrous medical conditions belie a sweet intelligence, and his otherworldly control freak of a mother, Olivia.”

The 13-episode first season begins with a young girl having been murdered near the abandoned Godfrey family steel mill. Skarsgard will play Roman Godfrey, an arrogant teen whose mother Olivia Godfrey (Janssen), is the controlling grande dame of Hemlock Grove.

You will best remember Janssen as Jean Grey from three X-Men films. Skarsgard, the younger brother of True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard, will soon be seen opposite Keira Knightley and Jude Law in Anna Karenina.

In spite of the book having some pretty awful reviews I am still excited about this show adaptation. And while vampire/werewolf shows are totally overdone, I still want more. Who knows, Hemlock Grove just may be the eerie werewolf show we’ve been craving.

What do you think of the upcoming Hemlock Grove TV show?

  1. If the Amazon reviews of the book are to be believed, this series won’t last long. I’ve counted more negative reviews versus good ones, and after reading the sample, I have to agree with them. The prose, which is so purple it’s scary, made my head spin. Plus, the plot made zero sense overall. Scene jumping in the story itself didn’t help.

If this does becomes a web series, for the love of all things werewolf, don’t be like Twilight and half-ass it.

  2. “The new streaming Netflix series from horror director/producer/writer/actor Eli Roth”

Well, if his previous work is any indication (Cabin Fever, Hostel movies):
    ……
    *Darth Vader* NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!! D:
    DO NOT WANT!

Hopefully they can get someone else who knows how to write dialogue, characters, and plot to replace Mr. “Faced!”. Cause otherwise I can foresee this mini-net show facing down some silver bullets soon before it goes anywhere.

The only thing I’m looking forward to then is Phelous ripping Roth’s “Hemlock Grove” a new one if it does come out. Can’t wait for that *graps popcorn*.

  3. Just because the source material(Hemlock Grove) is bad doesn’t mean the show based on the source material is gonna be just as bad. Their are actually great movies based on horrible source materials. As long as the team behind the tv series has a good mindset, and its handled well, the series may turn out way better than the novel. But, let us all pray for it to be a great, or well-done, werewolf show.

    1. Not if it’s being directed by Eli Roth.
So not only is the source material bad, the one making it into a show is known for making really bad movies. Unfortunately, people still try to defend Cabin Fever by saying it’s intended as a comedy after the fact. Yeah, I really buy that drivel is supposed to be a comedy…
Bad + Bad = Guess what that makes?!

I’m pretty sure he picked this on purpose so he could replace it with his great, wait, toss that, I mean really poor screen written dialogue.
I’ll grant that the man is very knowledgeable about obscure horror movies. But just because you know something, doesn’t mean you’re always good at making it.

  4. I really enjoyed the book, there’s some really interesting characters in this one, don’t understand all the bad reviews. I’m really looking forward to the show.

  5. This was supposed to be filmed in the Pittsburgh area but the deal fell through… Is a bummer to me because I live in the Pittsburgh area…
    Easy come, Easy go, eh?
