A picture is worth a thousand words, and the same is true of trailers. Watch the latest for the forthcoming season of STRANGER THINGS, then, and you will know as much as I do, or as much as anyone does who isn’t directly involved in the production of the series. (Or isn’t clairvoyant.) That doesn’t make it any less fun to discuss it, though, and so we shall.
Am I the only one who, upon seeing and hearing the way the trailer begins with the static and squealing of a radio, immediately recalled that this is the exact same way the second trailer for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS begins? Is this mere coincidence? It would make sense for it to be an homage, considering that Eleven herself, Millie Bobby Brown, stars in that forthcoming film.
Excellent use of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home,” too. And the hairspray to the face bit made me guffaw (probably because I’ve done that very thing to someone in real life, though, like Dustin, not on purpose); we know that it’s hairspray because if you look closely you can see Farrah Fawcett’s likeness on the can (or someone who looks a lot like her). This means that Dustin is still employing the tips he got from Steve last season. Real men have big hair!
I remember how the producers said that John Carpenter was going to be a big influence on this upcoming season, and now we know why. This season’s monster is none other than The Thing! How cool of Mr. Carpenter to allow them to use his monster, and how cool of Rob Bottin to recreate it for the folks at STRANGER THINGS. (I kid, I kid. But the monster is most assuredly a first cousin to The Thing, at least.)
The new season hits Netflix on July 4th.
