Never Offer to Buy a Cannibal Dinner
James Jameson got off on watching. Cannibalism, that is. This guy, for whose family the whiskey company, and porno star Jenna Jameson, are named, was a real creepazoid. He was a wannabe. He wanted to be “the most interesting man in the world,” an international man of intrigue like Sir Richard Francis Burton. Burton was still alive at the time, though, so the position was filled (and even if it hadn’t been, a loser like Jameson didn’t have a snowball’s chance in Death Valley of acquiring the title). Jameson, however, was a wannabe with money, and that’s always the worst kind of wannabe. Jameson bought himself permission in 1888 to go on an African expedition led by Henry Morton Stanley, the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, which ended up being a disaster. While on his little excursion, Jameson bought a slave girl and gave her to a bunch of cannibals so she could be killed and eaten—and he could watch.
This happened at the village of Ribakiba (now known as Lokandu) in the Congo, which was a prominent stopover point for poachers and slave raiders. The going price for a ten-year-old girl? Six handkerchiefs. Jameson’s translator told the cannibals: “This is a present from a white man who desires to see her eaten.” Jameson drew sketches of the murder and cannibalism, then turned those sketches into watercolors, and wrote a detailed account of the incident in his journal, though in the latter he tried to absolve himself of blame by claiming that he’d only been joking about the whole thing but the cannibals had taken him seriously.
There’s a little bit of justice, maybe, in that Jameson never lived to return home (where he wouldn’t have faced any kind of criminal charges, anyway); he died on the expedition.
