“There’s only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people’s cultures and the Dutch.” – Nigel Powers, GOLDMEMBER
Would viewing this movie, originally titled PROOI (PREY in English) and released in the Netherlands way back in 2016, cause Sir Nigel to deepen his hatred for the Dutch, or would he perchance forgive them just a little? It’s hard to say. Probably the former. But I was inclined to think more favorably of the Dutchmen after watching it. Not that I thought unfavorably of them before. I didn’t tend to think of them much at all, one way or the other, but I never took anything Nigel Powers said about them as gospel.
So anyway, UNCAGED is a killer lion movie. I spotted it on the shelf at my local Walmart during a recent shopping excursion and figured, as it was cheap, I’d pick it up and give it a watch. I didn’t feel like I’d wasted my money or my time. I was entertained for the entirety of the film’s runtime, and that’s something that cannot be said of every movie I sit down to watch.
The lion, rendered by CGI, looks like a lion rendered by CGI. Practical FX would have made for a better, more satisfying monster. There’s plenty of blood, though, as the beast notches up quite a body count, and plenty of half-eaten corpses that with their realism make up somewhat for the fakey lion.
UNCAGED is most certainly not THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS. But it is a lot of fun, all the same.
