Movie Review: THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW

I’ve been writing about this one for some time now. I had really hoped that it would be released to theaters in my geographic area, yet it never was. Yesterday I finally got hold of it on DVD. Was it worth the wait? Well, kinda, I guess.

I wanted to like this one a lot more than I did. I have great respect for people who write and direct (and in this case, star in) their own projects. Unfortunately THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW has the same problem that so many hybrid films have: Is it a Comedy? Is it Horror? Is it a Mystery? It is all three, but in trying to be all three at one time it fails to be a particularly outstanding specimen of any one of them. Writer/director Jim Cummings spends much of the movie yelling, but his performance lacks the quieter moments of gravitas necessary to anchor it. In terms of the script, there is some subtext there, but again, the sum of all the parts doesn’t provide a firm enough foundation to support them. The pieces that work aren’t welded together tightly enough. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed, as I’d gone in with my hopes up. If I’d seen this one cold, with no preamble, it would have been better.

But hey, at least Robert Forster is fantastic in it.

Overall grade: B-.
