Movie Review: THE UGLY

This was an unexpected little surprise. I’d never even heard of it before, when I chanced upon it in the bargain bin at my local Dollar General. The premise sounded intriguing enough that I was willing to gamble 99 cents, and I’m sure glad I did. The movie gets its name from the alter ego of a psychiatric patient incarcerated for several violent murders. It’s the Mr. Hyde to the patient’s Doctor Jekyll. The script is crisp and I was quite impressed with the performances. In particular Paolo Rotondo does excellent work in the lead role as both the imprisoned Simon Cartwright and the Ugly.

THE UGLY is comprised of several performers who all worked together on the XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS and HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS television series as well as the THE LORD OF THE RINGS movies. Writer/Director Scott Reynolds is a friend of Peter Jackson and helped out on the RINGS films, though imdb doesn’t say specifically what he did.

Visually, this one sticks in the mind because, while it doesn’t shy away from the gore, all the blood spilled is not red but appears as a deep, inky black, like old motor oil. This lends the film a fitting dreamlike quality, showing us the world as it is seen through the eyes of the Ugly.

By all means, dig this one out of the bargain bin if you chance upon it. Make it a point, even, to find it. It’s worth the effort.
