Movie Review: THE OTHER LAMB
I knew nothing about this one going in, save for the short synopsis provided by the venue, the King Drive-In in Russellville, Alabama. It was a movie about a cult, I learned, and had scored some good reviews on the Indy circuit. Googling it, I learned that it starred Raffey Cassidy from THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER and Michiel Huisman from THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, as a cult member and the cult leader, as it turned out.
I’ll tell you upfront that the movie moves slowly. If you don’t care for that type film, skip this one. But if you can appreciate a literate, intelligent, dreamy yet somber bit of psychological nerve-straining, this one is custom-built for you. It is fan-freakin’-tastic.
THE OTHER LAMB doesn’t make it easy for you. You have to wade in. The narrative sometimes deviates to deliver some alternate possibilities, before snapping you back to the film’s established reality. Any viewer not paying attention could get lost. And there aren’t any bells and whistles, no fireworks. The main resolution of the film, when it comes, takes place offscreen. But the film’s restraint gives it its power rather than detracting from it. There might be something that you wanted to see happen, but it might be more satisfying to let your imagination paint the picture for you when you see the end result.
As an aside, there’s his big ram that keeps showing up to glare ominously at the protagonist throughout the movie. I found myself wanting to see Black Phillip from THE WITCH in his place. Or maybe that *was* Black Phillip, just in a different guise. It sure could have been, given the film’s resolution. You’ll see.
