Movie Review: COME OUT AND PLAY
For a movie that’s a blatant ripoff (we’ll just lose the hyphen as it is outdated) of CHILDREN OF THE CORN (only without corn), this one is pretty good. Except that the kids are not scary. I mean, I’m never scared by Horror movies, and certainly not by kids in Horror movies, but I am capable of appreciating “screen presence”. And these little hooligans don’t really have it. Okay, so for a movie that’s a blatant ripoff of CHILDREN OF THE CORN (only without corn) and featuring kids that don’t have a lot of screen presence, this one is pretty good. I mean, it’s pretty to look at, and the acting isn’t bad. Only it suffers from the “people in Horror movies do stupid things” trope so common to the genre. The two protagonists are really stupid.
Okay, so for a movie that is a blatant ripoff of CHILDREN OF THE CORN (only without corn) and featuring kids that don’t have a lot of screen presence, with a pair of lead characters who are really—and by that I mean implausibly—stupid, this one is pretty good.
(I should note that the movie is a remake of a Spanish movie called WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? that was released in 1976, and that Stephen King didn’t write CHILDREN OF THE CORN until a year later. So COME OUT AND PLAY can’t really be a ripoff. Still, it has the same plot.)
COME OUT AND PLAY was produced, written, edited, and directed by one dude named Makinov. (Like Madonna, it would seem he needs only one name.) So I gotta give him props for that. And like I said, it’s pretty good. It’s just that the plot is way familiar, the kids aren’t scary, and the lead characters are implausibly stupid.
