This clickbait article promises to list the “most disturbing movies ever made.” I’ll save you the trouble of reading it and list those movies here. The people responsible for clickbait sites just love it when I do that. I’m not actually going to list them *all* though. After a while I got tired of scrolling through all the popups. I’ll list enough of them, however, to make my point. Also, I’ve limited myself to listing only movies I’ve seen.
Here they are: GET OUT. ROSEMARY’S BABY. RUBBER. ALIEN. ERASERHEAD. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. VIDEODROME. THEY LIVE. ANNIHILATION. SAW. THE SHINING. THE WITCH. THE RING. THE BABADOOK. IT FOLLOWS. HANNIBAL. THE STRANGERS. RAW. HEREDITARY.
That’s enough. There are some truly great films listed here. Great films. But not a one of them is “disturbing” to me.
A few of the offerings listed by the clickbaiters straddle the line between disturbing and not disturbing. MARTYRS is close enough to real-world horror that it is disquieting, as is WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. But the only things disturbing about THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2, A SERBIAN FILM, and THE GREEN INFERNO is that people were willing to spend the money to make them in the first place. They are pure shock value, shameless pandering to the gag reflex, gross-out attempts without an ounce of artistic value. Thinking about the cash wasted, and the type people who might actually find this sort of garbage worthwhile, is a little disturbing. The movies themselves aren’t relevant enough to be disturbing.
