Gael Garcia Bernal of OLD will be the titular werewolf, or *a* werewolf, at any rate, and one assumes he will be portraying that character. That has been announced previously, and I have reported on it previously, also noting that the character he will be portraying is considerably younger in the comics, a twentysomething. He also will not be portraying the original Werewolf by Night, a character named Jack Russell. This bothered me a smidge, as I do tend to prefer the legacy characters to ones of recent mintage. (Yes, I know that most of those legacy characters are white and I do understand the need for diversity, but I still favor the comics I grew up reading and the characters those comics contained.)
In a way, though, the upcoming Disney+ special *will* be involving Jack Russell. Laura Donnelly has also been cast, and it is rumored that she will portray the part of Nina Price, the Vampire by Night! From the press release: “Price is the niece of the character Jack Russell/Werewolf by Night and a vampire/werewolf hybrid. She carried the Lycan gene and was further changed after being bitten by a vampire.”
I am officially more excited about this project now. A werewolf *and* a vampire/werewolf hybrid. And possibly even Moon Knight, since it was in the Werewolf by Night comicbook that Moon Knight was first introduced. Yes, please!
