‘Kitty’s Greatest Hits’ Coming Soon to a Bookstore Near You

I can’t begin to tell you how many times readers here have gushed about how much they love Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville series, which is why I am happy to report that a new Kitty book is on the way! Coming August 16 is Kitty’s Greatest Hits, a collection of short stories all set in the Kitty Norville world.

Book description:

“The first-ever story collection from the New York Times bestselling author, including two all-new works!

Kitty Norville, star of a New York Times bestselling series, is everybody’s favorite werewolf DJ and out-of-the-closet supernatural creature. Over the course of eight books she’s fought evil vampires, were-creatures, and some serious black magic. She’s done it all with a sharp wit and the help of a memorable cast of werewolf hunters, psychics, and if-notgood- then-neutral vampires by her side. Kitty’s Greatest Hits not only gives readers some of Kitty’s further adventures, it offers longtime fans a window into the origins of some of their favorite characters.

In “Conquistador de la Noche,” we learn the origin story of Denver’s Master vampire, Rick; with “Wild Ride,” we find out how Kitty’s friend T.J. became a werewolf; and in “Life is the Teacher,” we revisit Emma, the human-turned-unwilling-vampire who serves the aloof vampire Master of Washington, D.C.

This entertaining collection includes two brand-new works: “You’re On the Air,” about one of Kitty’s callers after he hangs up the phone; and the eagerly awaited “Long Time Waiting,” the novella that finally reveals just what happened to Cormac in prison, something every Kitty fan wants to know.”

So Kitty fans, how excited are you about this upcoming book? I admit, I still haven’t checked the series out, I keep planning on it, but yeah, it’s one of many books on my ridiculously long to-read list. If only I had super-fast reading powers – that would be rad.

Super-fast reading powers would, indeed, be very useful…I have my own long…LONG…list of books to read. Guh. But that’s beside the point!

I’m not too enthused about short-story collections that just extrapolate on the backgrounds of the main characters. Now, if the series was inverse and the short stories came before the novels, that would be a completely different story.

Now, “Life as a Teacher,” “You’re on the Air,” and “Long Time Waiting” fall into a different category–those are just stories from within the world, itself, so that’s not too bad. But, then again, I’ve learned the hard way that short story collections are very much a mixed bag! I’d imagine this one might not be too much different (though if it leans toward the better or the worse we’ll have to wait to see!)

I’ve been following and reading the Kitty Norville series since the first book when I took a chance on a book featuring werewolves with a really horrible sounding title. Much to my surprise, I loved the book and the others after.

Far as short stories go, they can be useful to flesh out characters and background, what happened where. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series needed that short story collection of Side Jobs as he’s gotten to a point in his series there’s a lot of characters and a lot that’s happening and going on.

I expect it to be good. It’s Carrie Vaughn.

hmm. I have read the books and liked them well enough they were far better than I thought they were going to be. But the stories listed do not really make me all that excited. I do not get that invested in characters that I need to know everything about them, especially secondary characters. Origin stories are also not very high on my list. So while I will likely read it if it shows up in th library, I am not sure I will worry too much if I miss this.
