When it comes to the classic Universal Monsters, we Monsterkidz will take as much as we can get! There are several new projects in the works, thanks to the incredible success of this year’s THE INVISIBLE MAN both critically and financially. (Remember when this one came out? It seems so long ago now, though it was only a few short months. So much has happened since those innocent days of early 2020.) There’s a new Dracula movie in the works, and a new take on the Wolfman set to star Ryan Gosling and to be directed by THE INVISIBLE MAN’s own Leigh Whannell. There’s talk of a new Frankenstein, a new Bride of Frankenstein, and even a team-up movie ala the Avengers films. The latest word, confirmed, is that Josh Cooley, who directed TOY STORY 4, will write and direct LITTLE MONSTERS, which is to be “a love letter to classic Hollywood and the history of filmmaking with a story that takes a multigenerational approach to the monsters” and that the project will go with an “all-ages approach”. Hey, I’m down. Shades of THE MONSTER SQUAD, maybe? A live-action, more serious HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA? (Maybe more of the former than the latter.)
This raises all sorts of questions. Will this be part of a “shared” universe? Will the Monsters in this film be portrayed by the same actors from the other, adult-centric movies? Probably not, but right now it’s all open to conjecture.
