Is the DARK UNIVERSE Still Alive?
After TOM CRUISE VS. THE MUMMY (aka THE MUMMY) came out last year and spectacularly flamed-out both critically and financially (except for Europe), we got word that the (poorly) planned DARK UNIVERSE from Universal Pictures, to be based on the shared universe of Marvel movies and to stress Action-Adventure over Horror, was being put out to pasture. Nobody really mourned its passing, but if anybody had, I would suggest that those tears were perhaps premature. The Dark Universe may still be alive. Like any good Monster, it was destined to come back. Let us all hope that it has come back in a much-improved form.
Artist Robert Vargas posted on Instagram the following: “Great meeting this morning with the amazing #DarkUniverse team. Thank you #Universal Exec, Holly Goline and Crash for the hospitality. Looking forward to contributing to the Universal Pictures legacy with my work. Monster things in the works ;) Stay tuned!” We will indeed stay tuned, and we will all be hoping for the best. The picture Vargas posted in itself gives me hope: Bela Lugosi looking over the proceedings.
Let’s just pray that, if the Dark Universe is resurrected, the plans to have Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson star as the Wolfman will not be resurrected with it.
