Is it or isn’t it?

A remake, that is. I’m talking about the new THE HOWLING movie, subtitled REBORN, the happening of which has already been announced on this site. Since it’s subtitled, one might assume that this new flick is NOT a remake, and I have seen it repeatedly referred to as a re-BOOT than a re-MAKE. That’s good. That engenders hope. I’m sick of remakes. Hollywood has gone remake crazy. Has there been one mainstream Horror movie from the 70s or 80s that HASN’T been remade? And has there been even ONE remake that was in any way superior to the original? Has there been even one that was at least as good? I can’t think of any. Can you?

Then again, considering the HOWLING series has been on a steady downhill run for decades, with, generally speaking, each progressive sequel sucking worse than the movie preceding it (although the bottom of the pile is HOWLING 3, one of the worst movies I’ve ever had the misfortune to watch), it makes a sort of mad sense for the studio to want to wipe the slate clean and start over. I say, erase all the sequels, keep the first film, which was great, and give us a sequel worthy of its predecessor. Carbon-copying an existing script would be a mistake. Remember, the copy is ALWAYS inferior to the original.
