I chanced upon this online rumor that asserts that the Fouke Monster, star of THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK, made a cameo appearance in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had a werewolf or apelike creature appear in the STAR WARS universe. Remember Lak Sivrak? And then there’s the Yeti-like Wampa, and the little-utilized, blink-and-you’ll-miss-him character named “Chewbacca”, who is supposed to look like Sasquatch. But I did a little digging and I cannot find anything, other than the aforementioned mention (heh), about the Fouke Monster being in SOLO. I contacted Pamula Pierce Barcelou, daughter of Charles B. Pierce, creator of THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK and current caretaker of all things therein related, and asked her if she knew anything. It came as a surprise to her, and I’m doubting the people behind SOLO would have put the Monster in their movie without her hearing of it. She pointed out one existing connection, though, between the two movies. Artist and designer Ralph McQuarrie was the man largely responsible for the “look” of the entire STAR WARS universe; I would argue that McQuarrie is as integral to the creation of the STAR WARS franchise as is George Lucas, the Bill Finger to Lucas’s Bob Kane. (Trusting you all get the reference, here.) And Ralph McQuarrie created the poster for THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK!
Here’s what I think happened. I think some overzealous fan, knowing about the McQuarrie connection, and owing to the resemblance between the Fouke Monster and all the Wookies running around in SOLO, decided to create a rumor of something he wishes had happened.
