Introducing BLACKMANE

It’s funny how, as a writer, your views of your work can change with time. Hopefully, if you’re doing it right, if it’s working the way it’s supposed to work, you keep getting better at it as you go. You keep improving. And something that you considered your masterpiece, the greatest work you’d ever be capable of producing, is, when viewed after a little water has flowed past under the bridge, not as great and wonderful as you remember it. That’s how it is with my earlier stuff, the stuff that, if I have my druthers, will never see the light of day.

BLACKMANE, though, I think, holds up rather well. I’m proud to have my name attached to it.

I wrote BLACKMANE a few years ago. It was deemed unpublishable. Not because it wasn’t any good. I was told by people working in “the industry”, including one guy at one of the major publishers (I won’t name-drop him here) that my work was “more than solid”. But the manuscript was too long. Like, way too long. Far too long for any publisher to fork out the money to print, not for a newbie writer. I had the choice of cutting the book significantly, but I honestly felt, and still do, that the story won’t float if it’s too much truncated. It *needs* to be just as long as it is. Alas, I’m not Stephen King, and couldn’t get away with writing something that long. So, filled to the brim with disappointment, bitterness, and disillusionment, I buried the book, left it to lie in state, gambling that someday, somehow, it would find its way out into the world,

Someday is today.

The book’s still too long. No publisher will buy it at its current length. But there’s nothing stopping me from publishing it right here on this site in installments. That way, it’s still getting published, and I’m still getting paid. It’s just a different kind of publication than I’d originally planned. But, hey, paper’s loss is digital’s gain—and yours, hopefully.

BLACKMANE is the story of a different kind of beast-man, not a werewolf, per se, but a lycanthrope in all but name. It deals with genetic manipulation and crazy Science and monsters, both human and otherwise. I think you’ll dig it.

Look for the first installment of BLACKMANE right here on this site, this week!
