In Memoriam: Robert Forster
Mr. Forster has a lengthy professional biography, appearing in over a hundred films and even getting an Oscar nomination for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s JACKIE BROWN. What stands out the most in my mind, though, are his roles in 1980’s ALLIGATOR and as Sheriff Frank Truman in the third season of TWIN PEAKS. Forster stepped into the role of the sheriff after Michael Ontkean chose not to reprise his role as Sheriff Harry Truman from the first two seasons of TWIN PEAKS that aired 25 years earlier. (Ontkean is reportedly retired from acting.) Rather than recast the role, David Lynch chose to make Ontkean’s absence a part of the storyline. In season three we learn that Sheriff Harry Truman had to leave office after being diagnosed with a serious illness and that his brother Frank was now sheriff. With rumors going around (Please be true! Please be true!) that there will be a season four of TWIN PEAKS coming up, it looks like they will have to find yet another new sheriff. I wonder if a third brother will turn up, a third Sheriff Truman?
Ironically, Forster was the first choice for the role of Harry Truman way back when TWIN PEAKS first launched in 1990, but he had to refuse the part due to a scheduling conflict.
I’m gonna miss you, Sheriff Frank. Give the Log Lady our love.
