In Memoriam: Harry Dean Stanton
If ever there was a performer who epitomized the stereotypical “That guy” of the movies, it was Harry Dean Stanton. One of those actors who, if his name doesn’t ring any bells for you, you recognize his face as soon as you see it. (“Hey, it’s that guy!”) Mr. Stanton lived a good, long life, passing away this week at the age of 91. He worked for over six decades in the movies and television. Here are just a few of his credits: IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (the movie). COOL HAND LUKE. THE GODFATHER 2. Ah, but what would we geeks know him for, you may ask. How about ALIEN? CHRISTINE? THE GREEN MILE? THE AVENGERS?
I think, for me, the role for which I will always remember him most is that of sweet trailer-park proprietor Carl on TWIN PEAKS. (Don’t disturb him before 9 AM.) He was featured in the recently completed season three of the series and in the 1992 movie TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME. I’m saddened to hear that he has left us. That means we won’t get to see him in season four of the show, whenever David Lynch gets around to making it. We’ll miss you, Carl.
