In Defense of the DVD

This linked article makes me fightin’ mad. Why? Why should it set my teeth on edge? Because it is, at its most base level, a threat. It is threatening to take something away from me. My options. My ability to watch certain movies. And I’ll fight you over that. “Why Do DVDs Still Exist?” the headline asks. But then the article answers its own question, so it isn’t so much a threat in and of itself as it is informing me that a threat exists, i.e. that there are some people who think DVDs should no longer exist.

“…take pity on the once-hot video technology now more likely to be a makeshift coaster for your coffee”, the article says, but then admits that there remains “a solid cohort of consumers wedded to DVDs” and acknowledges that DVDs have superior sound quality to livestreaming. Also DVDs provide “a boon for small-town America [where viewers] in rural areas [LIKE ME!!!—Edit] with limited access to high bandwidth internet access [LIKE ME!!!—Edit again] rely on physical media for access to high-quality content”, and for people LIKE ME “[h]aving physical copies will always be king”. Damn. Straight. You’ll get my DVDs when you pry them from my cold dead fingers.
