Hunting the Rougarou: The Haunted Manchac Swamp

If you want to see the swamp, it’s easy. Just drive down, or up, Interstate 55 between Ponchatoula, Louisiana and Laplace, where a 22 mile stretch of bridge (the third longest in the world) traverses the swamp.

If you want to see it more up-close and personal, you either have to take a swamp tour from Cajun Pride Swamp Tours (which I highly recommend) or get your own boat and hit the water.

Raccoons and alligators have something of a truce, it seems.

Beneath the waters of the swamp lies the ghost town of Frenier, and the swamp is said to be haunted to this day by the ghost of Voodoo priestess Julia Brown, who predicted the hurricane that destroyed the town would occur on the day of her funeral in 1915. (It did.)

A mass grave. No one is certain how many victims of the 1915 hurricane are buried here.

The grave of Julia Brown

This gator almost jumped into the boat with me. Hungry for the piece of raw chicken the captain was dangling over the side, or protecting the gravesite of the Voodoo priestess? Probably both.

The swamp is also said to be haunted by the Rougarou, the Cajun Werewolf. Sadly I didn’t see it, but I was on the lookout.
