Good News and Bad News

The more I see from the forthcoming DARK UNIVERSE, the revamped shared universe of the classic Universal Monsters, the more hopeful I become. For example, check out this viral video for Prodigium. This last is the secret organization that will be at work in all the Dark Universe films, fighting the Monsters and trying to keep reign on “evil” in the world. It looks good. And the previews for THE MUMMY, opening this weekend, also look good. (I’m still a little conflicted about this one, though. Is it okay to be sexually attracted to one of the Universal Monsters? I DID always think the Bride was beautiful, so I guess it’s nothing all that new for me. And when my own original stage play, FRANKENSTEIN: THE UNTOLD STORY, was performed a few years ago, I made the decision to buck trend and cast a FEMALE Monster; clad only in bandages throughout the entire production, the fake stitches and blotches of jaundiced made-up skin didn’t stop the guys in the audience from ogling. Maybe it isn’t TOO sick to have the hots for a dead chick, then.)

Then I go and read that they want Angelina Jolie for the Bride of Frankenstein (I’m fine with that) and The Rock for the Wolfman (I’m NOT fine with that). Will somebody please send these idiot execs in their offices at Universal a clue they can share? The Rock is just about the WORST casting choice they could make for the role of Larry Talbot! Don’t take this role, Rock! And Universal, isn’t The Rock the highest-paid actor in the world? You can’t afford him! Especially with Warner Brothers suing you for copyright infringement over the “Dark Universe” title! (You can’t copyright a title, WB, but if your bluff scares Universal into NOT dishing out the millions they’ll need to get The Rock, I’m okay with it.)
