Frankenstein Returns!

These are exciting times for lovers of the classic Universal Monsters—and who among us isn’t? CBS has just ordered a new pilot for a television program to be entitled FRANKENSTEIN. This one isn’t the familiar tale of the mad scientist and the Monster we all know and love, however. It’s gonna be a cop drama! Check out the spin: “FRANKENSTEIN centers on a San Francisco homicide detective who’s mysteriously brought back to life after being killed in the line of duty, but as he resumes his old life and he and his wife realize he isn’t the same person he used to be, they zero in on the strange man behind his resurrection—Dr. Victor Frankenstein.” Could be brilliant or could be stupid, or could fall somewhere in the near-limitless space in-between those two extremes. Only time will tell, but it certainly sounds intriguing.

We shouldn’t get too excited too soon, though. Just because a pilot gets filmed doesn’t guarantee we’ll get to see it. It first will have to pass muster with the brass. If they like what they see, they’ll give it the greenlight to go on the air. Then, if it scores decent enough ratings, an order for a series will be placed. That’s typically how it gets done. We’re still several steps removed from a FRANKENSTEIN television series, but who knows? DRACULA ran for a half season on NBC in 2013-2014 (and there’s a new DRACULA series in the works from the BBC!). I say let us have ALL the Universal Monsters on television! Maybe Benecio del Toro would be willing to reprise his role as the Wolfman for a TV series?
