Even a man who is pure of heart, and says his prayers by night, may become a . . . RABBIT?!

One case that exudes so much creepiness and bizarreness that it has become unfettered from all attempts to classify it is the case of the Clifton Bunny Man, a demented figure with the appearance of a man-sized bunny that has purportedly terrorized the wooded Virginian countryside for years.

In European tradition, lycanthropes took the form of “werewolves,” literally men turning into wolves. People in Europe lived in genuine fear of wolves back then. Wolves at that point had not developed their inbred fear of people, and attacks were not uncommon. (Today the odds of anybody being attacked by a wolf are slim to slimmer.) Not surprising, then, that the populace would drape their bestial bogeyman in the guise of the resident’s most prevalent and dreaded predator. In India they have were-tigers, for the same reason. Across Africa, there are reports of were-hyenas and were-crocodiles. Russia has were-bears. Wolves, bears, tigers, crocs. Understandable. But a were-RABBIT?

To be accurate, the Bunnyman of Virginia is not an actual lycanthrope. Probably. He’s just a guy dressed in a rabbit costume. (Then again, how many historical werewolves were just guys wearing wolf skins, but no less dangerous for it?) The Bunnyman, though, doesn’t really exist. He is only an urban legend. BUT. In that grand old tradition of life imitating art, or life imitating legend, in this case, it seems that SOMEbody is determined to make the Bunnyman a reality by dressing and acting the part. Maybe. Who knows? Anybody out there believe in the Bunnyman?
