Does KONG pimp TARZAN?

Will the success of the new KONG: SKULL ISLAND film, in theaters now, help jumpstart that gestating sequel to THE LEGEND OF TARZAN? Both films were underestimated by sources that were supposed to be “knowledgeable” about such things. Both outperformed expectations at the box office. Both largely appeal to the same core audience. Both star Samuel L. Jackson. And both cost a veritable mint to make, with the majority of the budget going for special effects, and did, or will, in Kong’s case, make their money back over the long haul. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN eventually went on to be successful, and would be considered a big hit were it not for the hefty price tag attached. Look for KONG: SKULL ISLAND to fare similarly. KONG, however, is already guaranteed a sequel, when the gargantuan gorilla goes toe-to-toe with Godzilla in 2020. (I do not like having to wait so long, but what’re you gonna do?) Tarzan, on the other hand, while JUST having brought in enough profit (despite those who would suggest otherwise) to warrant a sequel, has yet to see one green-lit.

One thing Tarzan has going for it that King Kong and Godzilla don’t, despite what I just said, er, typed, about core audiences, is that women, surprisingly, made up a sizable portion of those who went out to theaters to see THE LEGEND OF TARZAN. It isn’t likely that the ladies will turn out for the big monsters because they are attracted to the love story aspect of the film(s).

Get off the pot, Warner Brothers. Give us that sequel! And hurry up, Legendary, with GODZILLA VS. KONG!
