Thus far news that Universal Studios plans to bring its pantheon of established “classic” Monsters out of retirement and put them to work in a Marvel-esque “shared universe” have been met with skepticism, if not outright derision. It’s not that any self-respecting Monster fan doesn’t want to see the legends back in action on the big screen, but when the suits in offices over at Universal, who, like all the suits in the offices at any and every movie studio, are universally stupid, started spouting off about making the new films more “action adventure” than classic Horror, we started cringing. Then we hear that they want to cast Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson as the Wolfman, and what little hope we held onto got snuffed out. Or almost. (It does spring eternal, after all.)
The source article linked below is written by a guy who’s managed to hold onto his hope. He even suggests that we, the Monster fans, should be excited about these upcoming remakes. I wish I could agree with him. But when he makes comments along the lines of the make-up effects from back then not standing the test of time, he displays that he really has no clue what he’s talking about. Or no taste. Either/or. Cheap CGI over the groundbreaking work of Jack Pierce? I think not, junior!
