Demonic Real Estate

I do feel bad for the owners of the house featured in the movie THE CONJURING. (A well-made film, but perhaps a little critically overrated, as the events recounted in the movie, ostensibly based on a true story, are all the same pretty familiar to genre fans.) The house shown in the movie is NOT the one currently owned by 68-year-old Norma Sutcliffe. However, as the names of the family besieged by evil spirits in the film are their real ones, the address at which they lived during the 1970s, when the problem with the spooks supposedly took place, is a matter of public record.

The owners of the Amityville Horror house—several different owners, actually—have had to deal with the same problem throughout the years. The current proprietors have physically altered the appearance of the home so that it no longer resembles the one in the movie. (No spooky window “eyes” glaring out at the world.) But is Hollywood really to blame for the criminal activities of trespassers? Should we blame the studios or the overzealous move fans themselves? If it were my house, I’d open it for paid tours and profit from the publicity, rather than just being the victim of it.
