“If you loved the classics NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, CRITTERS, DEAD HEAT, GHOULIES, THEY LIVE, and GREMLINS then you’re in for a real treat.” That’s what they’re saying about next year’s CREATURES, due out at Christmas. And the puppet masters who’ve been working on the new Netflix THE DARK CRYSTAL series will be bringing their skills to bringing the titular creatures to life, so that sounds promising. But wait…GHOULIES? They really put GHOULIES in there? I mean, it does have lots of little creatures and practical FX, so I guess it fits. We’re obviously not talking overall quality with those movies listed, with THEY LIVE and GREMLINS occupying one pole and the others way on down at the other. Which pole will CREATURES shoot for? Will it be a fun but terrible “creature feature” or a Grade-A Horror flick with awesome creature FX?
Here’s the synopsis: “A group of astronomy students get more than they bargained for after finding an injured alien who is being targeted by a group of bloodthirsty alien creatures.” Sounds an awful lot like the setup for the CRITTERS films. This would lead me to expect one of those South Pole offerings, a pure B-movie. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though. Cheesy B-movies can be great fun. But then again, there’s GHOULIES. Time will tell which of these beasts CREATURES turns out to be. At least we’re guaranteed that the monsters will look cool.
